This was probably the shortest birth I've had to attend yet, but length of time doesn't change anything in terms of the family dynamic. In the end, a beautiful baby is still born, and everyone goes home happy. The moment the mother hears the baby cry holds the same reaction, whether they have been in labor for 24 hours, or in surgery for 30 minutes. Nothing changes that response... nothing. It's always an intensely emotional moment. I was very glad that I got the chance to photograph this birth from inside the OR. After speaking with several of my doula friends, none of them have had that privilege with this particular hospital, so I felt my odds were slim. It really is so much about odds. I got lucky that it was a great staff who were more than accommodating to my request of being in the room. Big thanks to everyone at Baylor All Saints. You will make Lane's mama very happy, as soon as the finals are completed.
As for the family, Lane will be going home to a full house with two older brothers. He came out weighing more than both of them. The mom said "God made him big and strong so that he could fight off his two older brothers." haha Boys will be boys. He was definitely big at strong at 8lb 14oz. I am thrilled for this family and excited to hear about how the boys are getting along, next time I talk to the mama. Congratulations guys!
